The Effect of an Experimental Brood Reduction on Male Desertion in the Panamanian Blue Acara Cichlid Aequidens coeruleopunctatus

چکیده
Investment in present vs. future reproduction is a life-history trade-off faced by many animals. Because males generally pay a higher cost from lost mating opportunities than females, males are expected to react more strongly to changes in brood value. We examined the effect of an experimental brood reduction on male desertion in the substrate-brooding biparental cichlid Aequidens coeruleopunctatus under field conditions. We tested the prediction that brood reduction should decrease the duration of male care and examined the effect of brood reduction on the quahty of male and female parental care. Our results show that males with reduced broods stopped providing parental care earlier than males with control broods. Males with reduced broods, however, also stayed longer with their broods as the season progressed. Brood reduction did not decrease daily investment in male or female parental care. We conclude that males trade off present and future reproduction by changing the duration but not the quality of parental care. The longer duration of male care in the experimental group later in the season suggests that the trade-off between present and future reproduction changes as the season progresses because the payoffs of desertion progressively decrease. Rearing in different photic and spectral environments changes the optomotor response to chromatic stimuli in the cichlid fish Aequidens pulcher.
Developmental plasticity of spectral processing in vertebrates was investigated in fish by using an innate behavior, the optomotor response. Rearing blue acara (Aequidens pulcher; Cichlidae) under white lights of different intensities as well as deprivation of long wavelengths induced significant changes in the animals' responses to chromatic stimuli. Deprivation of short wavelengths had no eff...
متن کاملMouthbrooding and biparental care: an unexpected combination, but male brood care pays
Biparental care is expected to occur if (1) the costs of desertion for a parent are high, because of greatly reduced survival prospects of offspring, or (2) the benefits of desertion are low. Among mouthbrooding fish, biparental care is rare because the mouth cavity provides a safe brooding site, thus reducing the selective advantages of shared brood care. Eretmodus cyanostictus is a monogamous...
متن کاملBrood desertion by female shorebirds: a test of the differential parental capacity hypothesis on Kentish plovers.
The aim of this study was to examine whether the energetic costs of reproduction explain offspring desertion by female shorebirds, as is suggested by the differential parental capacity hypothesis. A prediction of the hypothesis is that, in species with biparental incubation in which females desert from brood care after hatching, the body condition of females should decline after laying to a poi...
متن کاملAn experimental test on time constraint and sexual conflict over parental care
Because parental care is costly, a sexual conflict between parents over parental investment is expected to arise. Parental care behavior is an adaptive decision, involving trade-offs between remating, and consequently desertion of the brood, and continuing parental effort. If the main advantage of desertion is remating, then this will be a time constraint, because the deserting individual will ...

The blue-gray gnatcatcher, Polioptila caerulea, is one of the smallest regular hosts of the brown-headed cowbird, Molothrus ater. Gnatcatchers typically raise none of their own young when parasitized, yet anti-parasite behaviours have not been reported. A blue-gray gnatcatcher population in which pairs often desert nests when parasitized by cowbirds was studied to examine the success of a deser...
